Is your first name Wolff?
No it isn't, it's Wally... Wallace actually but nobody calls me that. Wolff Olins was named after me and the other co-founder Michael Wolff

Did you go to University?
Yes I did. Oxford.

What did you study?
History.

Why?
Because I was interested in it

What did you do when you left Oxford?
I joined an advertising agency and after a bit was sent to run the company office in India.

That seems an odd choice for someone who studied history?
I know - but like most things in my life it kind of happened.

How did you come up with the idea of corporate identity?
Well it wasn't just me, plenty of other people were thinking about it but I didn't know them. It seemed sensible to present the idea of the company as a whole, through its products, environment and behaviour rather than just through one activity communication or advertising and that's how we thought about it.

You're known for your glasses and bow-ties. Did you decide to brand yourself consciously or did your image just develop on it's own?
My wife persuaded me to wear bow-ties, and I just liked the glasses so my so called brand image developed on its own.

Who do you admire?
I'm a bit too long in the tooth to do much admiring. Most people have strengths and weaknesses. I mostly take people as I find them.

What are your strenghts?
I'm clear-headed and I talk straight. I think I'm probably reasonably imaginative.

What are your weaknesses?
Plenty. For example I'm very impatient. I don't like getting involved in things that don't interest me.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in branding?
Are you sure you want to?
